Highland Planning collaborated with the Village of Dolgeville, Colliers Engineering & Design, and LAndArt Studio to develop a preliminary construction document set (50% design) in preparation for the future construction of North Main Street Waterfront Park — a new public riverfront park, approximately 3.75 acres in size, along East Canada Creek in the Village of Dolgeville. North Main Street Waterfront Park is designed to mitigate flood risks, expand outdoor recreational amenities for residents, provide public access to East Canada Creek, and increase environmental sustainability. The design also includes a new playground, walking paths, a swing garden overlooking the creek, bioretention areas to manage stormwater, native plantings to reduce shoreline erosion, and creek access for fishing and other water activities. With a 900 square foot open air pavilion to serve as a gathering hub for the community and nearly 5,000 square feet of porous pavement to infiltrate stormwater on-site, it is providing accessibility for residents of all ages and abilities to enjoy, Highland Planning collaborated with the project team on all deliverables and led the development of the landscape plan and implementation action plan.
The North Main Street Waterfront Park is located on the western bank of the East Canada Creek and is entirely within the creek’s 100-year floodplain which has historically been impacted by flooding and the Village successfully implemented a voluntary floodplain buy-out program. Eighteen property owners accepted the buy-out, effectively removing properties from future flood risks and creating space for the new proposed Waterfront Park. Now, the park will further reduce flood hazards by allowing the Creek to reclaim part of its original floodplain while also providing important recreational space for the community. Highland Planning recently prepared a Green Resiliency Grant application for the Village of Dolgeville and successfully secured $1.75M for final design and park construction.
