Project Spotlight
Highland Planning supported the Albany County Executive’s Office with the Albany County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan Update. A major component of the Hazard Mitigation Plan Update was gaining participationfrom all municipalities within the County to ensure their needs, capacity, and actions related to hazard mitigation are accurately documented. Highland Planning led the interviews and jurisdictional annex development for six municipalities: the Towns of Westerlo, Knox, Berne, and Rensselaerville and the Villages of Voorheesville and Colonie. Working closely with each community, Highland Planning held a series of in-person and virtual meetings to clearly document natural hazards, describe the impacts of those hazards, identify vulnerable communities, assess local capacity and needs, and propose feasible and relevant hazard mitigation actions.
By facilitating a series of detail-oriented meetings, Highland Planning played an integral role in ensuring every municipality in Albany County was included in this Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan Update, and in turn, eligible for several hazard mitigation funding programs offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Proactively planning for and mitigating natural hazards increases communities’ resilience to future climate change, protects public health and well-being, and enhances a community’s quality of life
